Tamar Hermann

Dr. Tamar Herman is a professor of political science at the Open University and a senior fellow at the Israel Democracy Institute.


Over the years, she has held many positions at the university, including Head of Department, Dean of Academic Studies, Vice President of Academic Affairs and more. 

She is currently the Editor-in-Chief of “Lamda Iyun”, the non-profit publishing house of the Open University.


From 1994 to 2006, she was the director of the Tami Steinmetz Center for Peace Studies at Tel Aviv University.

Within the Israel Democracy Institute, Prof. Herman heads the Viterbi Center for the Study of Public Opinion and Policy.


In the years 1994-2018, Prof. Herman, together with Professor Ephraim Yaar, headed the "Peace Index" project, which consisted of monthly public opinion polls that followed the changes in Israeli public opinion regarding the Israeli-Arab conflict and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and changes in prevailing views to solve it.


Since 2019, she has been part of the Israel Democracy Institute, headed by the "Israeli Voice Index" team, which deals with Israeli public opinion on various social and political issues, including foreign and security policy. Every year, it publishes the report of the Israeli Democracy Index.


Prof. Herman has taught at many academic institutions abroad and is frequently interviewed by Israeli and foreign media on public opinion and the political system in Israel.


In 2021, Prof. Herman received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her academic achievements on behalf of the Israeli Association for International Affairs.
